Vessel Safety Examinations

A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain Safety Equipment required by State and the Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the United States Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater. This is not boarding or a law enforcement issue. Please see our Vessel Examination page for a listing of our local VSC's.

New Paragraph

Port Huron Power Squadron:

619 River Street  Port Huron MI 48060

We share a National Border with Canada - Be aware of the reporting rules when traveling .

Reporting in to Canada

Go directly to a Telephone Reporting Site-Marine (TRS/M) and follow the instructions posted on location to contact the CBSA Telephone Reporting Centre (TRC) and request clearance to enter Canada. Only the owner/operator may leave the boat to place the call to the TRC. Everyone else must remain onboard until the CBSA gives authorization.

Reporting to the United States

Small Vessel Reporting System (SVRS) is no longer in service and float plans will no longer be accepted. Boaters looking for a new, faster way to report their arrival and/or apply for a registered boater program may use the CBP ROAM app, available for free on the Apple App and Google Play stores. Boaters may also continue to report their arrival via designated telephone reporting numbers, if desired.

The Official Boating Handbook of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Know the State of Michigan laws before you set out. There is a lot of boat traffic in our area and what to do ahead of time will make for a safer return.
